Baking...

Sometimes all you need is a good baking day. I love putting on a podcast in the kitchen and getting stuck in. Giggling away to something I'm listening to whilst mixing up my ingredients brings me such joy. There's something to be said about creating something yourself, I feel the cakes just taste that little bit better when I know I've put my time and effort into it.

I've also discovered a new quirk of mine. If I come across a recipe online or in one of our books I have to write it down before I use it. I don't even write it down in my recipe book but in a random notebook I have on hand or a scrap of paper even. I have no idea where this need came from or why I do it but I realised that I've always done it. It is fun to come across random old recipes whilst tidying though.

Wednesday Challenge Update 01.08.12

From Goodreads
Heart-Shaped Box - Joe Hill

From Goodreads:
Judas Coyne is a collector of the macabre: a cookbook for cannibals...a used hangman's noose...a snuff film. An aging death-metal rock god, his taste for the unnatural is as widely known to his legions of fans as the notorious excesses of his youth.
For a thousand dollars, Jude will become the proud owner of a dead man's suit, said to be haunted by a restless spirit. He isn't afraid. But what UPS delivers to his door in a black heart-shaped box is no imaginary or metaphorical ghost, no benign conversation piece. It's the real thing. And suddenly the suit's previous owner is everywhere. Waiting--with a gleaming razor blade on a chain dangling from one bony hand.

Not sure how I came across this book but I'm glad I did. Joe Hill is Stephen King's son and although this book is nowhere near as scary as some of King's stuff I still found it hard to put this book down. A nice twist on a traditional ghost story this book sees an angry, aggressive ghost haunting Coyne after he buys it for a thousand dollars.

So, only one book this week. My reading has slowed down as I've started tackling Game of Thrones. I'm about half way through that so hopefully the number of books will pick back up soon.
My total is now 37/50 and as always you can keep up with what I'm currently reading on my Goodreads page or look at past weeks for the book challenge here.

Love and Lust...

Taken during our trip to Brighton

I'm loving...
  • This hair tutorial over on the Modcloth blog. My hair is in an annoying in between stage that I'm having trouble doing anything with so I'm excited to try out these styles. I especially like the second one.
  • Baking. I made some of these custard and white chocolate biscuits last weekend and I can't stop eating them!
  • This tutorial for turning handwritten recipes into tea towels. I think some people close to me will be getting some of these for Christmas.

I'm lusting after...

This bracelet I found on Etsy. I have to be honest and say one of these has already found its way into the post towards me. I was lusting after it a little too much. Haha.

This lovely necklace from Etsy. It's just so pretty, it makes me feel calm and serene just looking at it.

This case for a Kindle. My Kindle is currently being protected in a hat when I carry it around in my bag. I really do need a case to protect it and I love this bold chevron case.

Wednesday Challenge Update 25.07.12

The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Ectoplasmic Man
                        - Daniel Stashower
From Goodreads:
When Harry Houdini is framed and jailed for espionage, Sherlock Holmes vows to clear his name, with the two joining forces to take on blackmailers who have targeted the Prince of Wales.
It’s a case that requires all of their skills — both mental and physical. Can the daring duo solve what people are calling “The Crime of the Century”?

After reading the Peerless Peer I became interested in the other books in the series. Each book is written by a different author and although I've been enjoying a lot of books by Jose Farmer this year I actually preferred this to the Peerless Peer. I enjoyed the banter between Sherlock and Houdini and the premise itself.

The Beasts of Tarzan - Edgar Rice Burroughs

From Goodreads:
As THE BEASTS OF TARZAN begins, Tarzan -- as Lord Greystoke -- is settled in civilized London. But two of his enemies, Nikolas Rokoff and henchman Alexis Paulvitch, are on his trail. The pair abducts Jane -- and Tarzan's son, Jack. Tarzan himself is stranded on a desert island, but with the help of Sheeta the panther and Akut the great ape he makes it back to the mainland. There he meets Mugambi, the giant chief of the Wagambi tribe, who becomes Tarzan's lifelong friend and ally.

I've been wanting to read the next Tarzan book for months. I really enjoyed the first two and although I'd heard that they get progressively worse I wanted to try them for myself. This one was a little silly in parts and extremely unbelievable but I still enjoyed it. It was a guilty pleasure and one I'll be indulging in again when I read the next one.

The Illustrated Man - Ray Bradbury

From Goodreads:
Only his second collection, it is a marvelous, if mostly dark, quilt of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. In an ingenious framework to open and close the book, Bradbury presents himself as a nameless narrator who meets the Illustrated Man--a wanderer whose entire body is a living canvas of exotic tattoos. The illustrations are themselves magically alive, and each proceeds to unfold its own story, such as "The Veldt," wherein rowdy children take a game of virtual reality way over the edge. Or "Zero Hour," in which invading aliens have discovered a most logical ally--our own children. Even though most were written in the 1940s and 1950s, these 18 classic stories will be just as chillingly effective 50 years from now.

I must confess that I'd never read any Ray Bradbury before this. I've wanted to for a while and this challenge seemed like as good a time as any. I'm so, so glad I did. The writing is amazing. I was hooked. Although I didn't like all of the stories the writing and the imagery it creates kept me reading and enjoying them. I can't wait to try some more of his writing.

So, three shorter books this week after the mammoth read of last week. I seemed to stray toward the classics and all three of my reads have left me wanting to find and devour more of the same. At this point in my challenge I'm on 36/50. It feels pretty good that I've only got 14 books left to go. As always you can find me on Goodreads to see what I'm currently or what's up next. You can also catch up on past weeks here.

Graduation Gift

I finally finished these little foxes for my brother and his girlfriend. I wanted to give them a little surprise gift for their graduations. I haven't used a sewing machine in about 4 years so this was really my first adventure back in the world of sewing. I used the tutorial over on A Beautiful Mess which I'd pinned a while back. The tutorial was really easy to follow and I was pretty happy with the end result. I may even make some more once I've practised with the sewing machine a bit more. I'd like to experiment with the fabrics and colours.

Brighton

Snapshots from out trip to Brighton last week

  1. Brighton Pier at night
  2. Our view from the pier
  3. Outside our hotel window
  4. Obligatory couple shot on the beach
  5. Watching the waves in the morning sun
  6. Photo slides that we bought
  7. A little soup mug that I just had to bring home with us
  8. My new favourite photo of the two of us. Taken in a photobooth.

We headed down to Brighton on Wednesday to surprise my little brother on his graduation day and spend a couple of days by the seaside. Seeing as we weren't surprising my brother until Thursday evening we had almost two full days to spend together soaking up as much fun as possible. I think we succeeded. We checked in at our hotel and headed straight back out to meet Matt's brother and his partner for an evening of catching up, good food, fun times and unfortunately no photographs. After we said goodbye to them Matt and I weren't ready to head back to the hotel so we bought some cheeky doughnuts and took a wander along Brighton pier.
Thursday saw us getting out and about early to make the most of our time. We strolled along the beach in the morning sunshine taking some photos before heading towards the shops. We came away from the shops with some photo slides, a cute soup mug and our first photobooth pictures. I'd call that successful and we had so much fun finding our little treasures. In the spirit of adventure we went to a Vietnamese street food restaurant for lunch which was oh so good but extremely filling. All that was left to do was head back to the hotel to get ready for our big surprise. Oh was my brother surprised. I don't have a copy of the photos yet as my Dad was the photographer for all of the posed shots but I was so proud of my brother and his girlfriend. After what felt like a hundred photos of different combinations of people we headed for a drink and then a big family meal in an awesome restaurant.
After fitting all of that adventure in to a couple of days it was a tired, quiet train journey back to Bath. We managed to fit in one last little bit of fun when we got home though. Lunch out and then a trip to watch The Dark Knight Rises at the cinema.
We had so much fun over those three days and it was just what we needed. We've felt a little trapped and stuck in a rut recently but our trip blew all of the cobwebs away and provided us with much needed inspiration.

Travelling Together.

On Wednesday Matt and I travelled to Brighton to surprise my little brother on his graduation day. I'll do a full post about our fun filled trip once I've finished sorting through all of the photos I took but whilst I was looking through the first few pictures I started thinking about travelling. Travelling with Matt specifically. It's something I really enjoy doing but don't often appreciate fully. Adventures are definitely our thing and we're pretty relaxed about the travelling part. Well, when we're in the car I'm pretty relaxed. We could take a hundred wrong turns and I wouldn't stress in the slightest. When travelling by train Matt becomes the relaxed one, I worry a little more about connections and getting to the station on time. Once on the train though we have a good routine; a bag of mints, our kindles and our best conversations. I really enjoy train journeys with Matt.
